(FBOP) - Within the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) female facilities, adults in custody (AICs) are seizing the opportunity to amend their narratives through education. For FY23, the FBOP had 652 incarcerated females earn their General Educational Development (GED). Since October 1, 2023, 359 incarcerated women have already earned their GED with five months remaining for FY24. FPC Bryan claims the highest number of completions with 62 AICs who have earned their GED; FCI Aliceville follows closely with 59. Though the path to success may be grueling, many incarcerated women are embarking on a transformative journey, and it begins with earning a GED.
For these individuals, incarceration can perpetuate cycles of disadvantage, hindering their prospects for reintegration into society upon release. However, the FBOP's GED program offers hope, providing them with the tools they need to build a brighter future. Carefully crafting our curriculum, our GED programs within the female population recognize the unique challenges they face and provide a supportive and empowering learning environment. The FBOP's programs offer flexible scheduling, individualized instruction, and a curriculum that addresses their specific educational needs and life experiences. For many, the classrooms become a sanctuary-a place where they can identify their purpose, defy the odds, and rewrite their script.
By earning their GED, they earn a lifeline-a chance to break free from the cycle of incarceration and chart a new course for themselves.
